Tape Lab Ends All Future Collaborations with U2
Tape Lab Declares End to Future Collaborations with U2 Amid Creative and Ethical Dispute
In light of an ongoing and irreconcilable conflict between Tape Lab’s own Schuyler and U2’s guitarist The Edge, we are announcing that Tape Lab will not be involved in any future collaborations with U2.
This decision was not made lightly, as Tape Lab has historically celebrated creative partnerships that push boundaries and resonate with authenticity. However, this divide underscores values we refuse to compromise on.
Schuyler refuses to continue ANY creative, or personal, relationship with THE EDGE.
The crux of the dispute centers around Schuyler’s vocal opposition to several initiatives that The Edge has championed, particularly his well-documented enthusiasm for large-scale architectural projects prioritizing spectacle over sustainability. Most notably, Schuyler has called out The Edge’s controversial backing of “The Sphere,” a massive entertainment complex hailed by some as a marvel of technology but criticized by others, including Schuyler, for its environmental footprint and its erosion of meaningful, human-scale art spaces.
“Art needs intimacy and integrity,” Schuyler stated. “When the focus shifts to building towering monuments to ego, we lose the connection that makes music and art vital in the first place. That’s not a road Tape Lab is willing to walk down, and it’s certainly not a road to collaboration.”
In response, The Edge reportedly dismissed the critique as “short-sighted” during discussions, further fueling a philosophical clash between the parties that could not be resolved.
Tape Lab’s legal team issued the following statement:
“While we kind of respect U2’s legacy and influence, we stand firmly with Schuyler. There is no legal avenue to mend our fundamental disconnect in creative vision and ethical priorities. Both parties agreed to cease any future engagements.”
This announcement closes the chapter on what could have been an intriguing partnership between two distinctly different musical forces. Tape Lab remains committed to creating art that speaks truth to power, shuns unnecessary excess, and keeps underground culture alive and thriving.
