The PlayStationary Story: Part I

Tape Labe is not usually sample-based. Most of our music is fully-original (whatever that means), but back in 2018 we wanted to use some of our favorite video game-based samples to build out an album. In true Tape Lab fashion, that “1 song” has become an on-going compilation series that now spans 9 featured EPs, each with a distinct style and character.

So, here is the PlayStationary Story. Or, at least the first part of it.

The 9 releases are broken into 3 groups, (PS1, PS2, and PS3), each with 3 volumes and varying number of songs. This Deep Dive will cover the first three releases, Jade Calibur; ChronoCross Fit; and QUAID RUNNER.

PlayStationary One Vol. 1

Jade Calibur

The original, recorded back in Efland using some of our FAVORITE video game samples in the Soul Calibur IV narrator + Jade Cacoon + the classic Yamaha sounds and Kaosillator.

Jade Calibur || GeniSNES || Show Ur Strength

PlayStationary One Vol. 2

ChronoCross Fit

Originally recorded in 2019. Still gaming with some of the best PS1 era music ever in the ChronoCross OST by Yasunori Mitsuda. The Animal Crossing samples are haunting and kind weird! Snuck in a lil DBZ sample for you Gohan lovers, ALL the way from the Village to your brain.

ChronoCross Fit || Animals Across || Village to the East

PlayStationary One Vol. 3

QUAID RUNNER

Love you big Dawg Dennis! Maybe not technically PlayStation samples, but you get the idea. Dennis Quaid mayhem, featuring one of our really reluxed beats in Quaid & See! Don't forget the music video. These beats are fun and emblematic of the Tape Lab underground ethos.

Quaid Runner || Ace of Quaids || Quaid & See

Part 3. The final chapter of the first trilogy in the ongoing Playstationary saga. Music created by reLux (CD+ and 2yng2smpl) of TapeLab Track-List: 0:00 - Ace of Quaids 1:05 - Str8 Quaided 1:50 - Quaiders of the Lost Ark

TapeLab

Welcome to #TapeLab—stay a while and listen. Founded in 2017 by lifelong friends, Tape Lab is a collective of artists and a hub for innovation, always open to collaboration. With the zeal of a self-published memoir, our sound is our own, but you can be the decider. We make music and art that sounds like it was fun to make and stands out in a sea of bland beats.

As independent artists, we are always exploring new ways to expand our audience and find new creative outlets—especially with other undiscovered artists!

#TapeLab is currently based out of two headquarters in Durham, NC, and The Hamptons, NY.
