We Are Rewind x Chromeo Tape Deck

Beautiful, But Bluetooth Still Sounds Brown

TLDR: The design is great and features are ALMOST exactly what a real cassette lover would need. Just don’t bother with the Bluetooth.

If you are reading this blog, most likely, the algorithm has already started feeding you ads for WE ARE REWIND’s “Modernized Tape Player.”

You can buy one here.

They are NOT cheap ($200 after taxes and fees) and don’t really replace any of your other portable walkmans - so, we recomend that you use what you already have.

The Chromeo Album: Adult Contemporary is great! We love their sound, as always. Funky and fresh. and just a little tongue-in-cheek. I wonder if they mastered this album specific for Tape?

We got the CHROMEO branded limited edition, which they stated had a run of just 500 copies. As of this writing, they are NOT sold out, so I doubt that there were actually just 500 available.

The French company appears to be more than a dropshipping company and the packaging was legit. TBH, the real reason we got one was because of the Chromeo partnership. P-Thug would NEVER scam us.

Plus, I can’t imagine that Chromeo listens to their music on Bluetooth speakers.

WHAT WE LOVE:

  • ALL METAL CONSTRUCTION

  • Use the metal as a mirror

  • REC function is crucial and a happy inclusion

  • Audio over wired headphones sounds okay

ISSUES:

  • No HOLD/LOCK button is a hassle

  • Where is the onboard EQ?

  • Noise Reduction Modes are Missing

  • Tape Audio over Bluetooth sounds much worse than you can imagine. DO NOT listen to Tape Lab Tapes via Bluetooth.

  • Why is there no eject button? It seems likely that I will snap off the protective cover one of these days.

  • Cannot connect to Bluetooth in the car because there is no way to type in a code on the device (maybe this is my car’s fault)

  • Cannot record audio over Bluetooth.

TapeLab

Welcome to #TapeLab—stay a while and listen. Founded in 2017 by lifelong friends, Tape Lab is a collective of artists and a hub for innovation, always open to collaboration. With the zeal of a self-published memoir, our sound is our own, but you can be the decider. We make music and art that sounds like it was fun to make and stands out in a sea of bland beats.

As independent artists, we are always exploring new ways to expand our audience and find new creative outlets—especially with other undiscovered artists!

#TapeLab is currently based out of two headquarters in Durham, NC, and The Hamptons, NY.
